Facelift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy, targets noticeable aging on the face and neck to provide a refreshed and younger-looking appearance. At Bronx Plastic Surgery, Dr. Robert Goldstein and Dr. Elnekaveh combine artistry with advanced surgical techniques to restore youthful contours and create a beautiful and naturally balanced look.
The Science Behind a Facelift: How It Rejuvenates Your Appearance
A facelift is a surgical procedure that turns back the clock on aging by refreshing the appearance with dramatic and long-lasting results.
Years of aging, gravity, sun damage, stress, and heredity can take a toll on the body, often leading to wrinkles, creases, and sagging skin. Men and women may feel that as they age, their outward appearance does not match the youthfulness they feel inside.
Facelift plastic surgery is designed to rejuvenate the lower two-thirds of the face, including the jawline. While the common belief is that facelifts only involve pulling and stretching the skin, more advanced techniques achieve natural results by tightening the underlying tissue and muscle and gently lifting and repositioning these support tissues to achieve more youthful contours. A neck lift is frequently included in the procedure to tighten skin and muscles and remove excess fat in the neck.
A facelift can address the following aging concerns:
- Deep fold lines between the nose and the corners of the mouth
- Sagging, excess skin in the mid-face or jowls
- Displaced or lost facial volume (sunken cheeks)
- Loose skin and excess fat on the neck that can look like a “double chin” or “turkey neck”
What to Expect During Your Facelift Surgery
Facelift surgery can be performed on an inpatient or outpatient basis. Anesthesia options include general anesthesia, intravenous sedation, and local anesthesia with oral sedation. Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Elnekaveh will discuss these options and recommend the best one according to your preferences and surgical procedure.
Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Elnekaveh begin the facelift procedure by making incisions; their length and placement are determined by the specific facelift technique used. Typically, an incision begins above the hairline at the temples and continues behind the earlobe to the lower scalp. This positioning is used to conceal scars following the procedure.
After making the incisions, the platysma (connective tissue) and muscle plane (superficial musculoaponeurotic system, or SMAS) are gently lifted and tightened. Excess fat and skin are removed, and the skin is redraped over the newly lifted tissue to produce a smooth and refreshed appearance.
Finally, Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Elnekaveh will use stitches to fixate the tissue layers and close the incision. Drainage tubes will be inserted if needed, and a supportive dressing will be applied. The entire facelift surgery can take 2-3 hours to complete.

Recovery and Aftercare
After your surgery, you’ll feel sore and experience bruising and swelling for about 2-3 weeks, but you’ll be capable of caring for yourself immediately after your facelift. To minimize swelling and bruising, Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Elnekaveh may place a draining tube to collect excess blood and fluid. This will be removed during one of your follow-up visits.
Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Elnekaveh will remove your bandages a few days after your facelift, and you will have regular follow-up visits with him so he can assess your progress and remove your stitches.
Most facelift patients can return to work in 2-3 weeks. To aid in your recovery, you’ll be given specific aftercare instructions and pain relievers you can take. Post-surgery care typically includes the following instructions:
- Keep your head elevated for several days after surgery.
- Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and bruising.
- Avoid bending or lifting heavy objects.
- Avoid hitting or bumping your face.
- Avoid strenuous activities like running and weightlifting for about 3 weeks.
Is a Facelift Surgery Right for You?
Ideal facelift candidates are those with moderate to severe signs of facial and neck aging. These signs include deep facial creases, sagging cheeks, jowls, loss of facial volume, and neck banding. Candidates should be in good general health and have realistic expectations of their results. To ensure a smooth surgery and recovery process, candidates should not smoke six weeks before and after the surgery.
Assessing Candidacy and Expectations
Facelift surgeries are individualized surgeries unique to each patient’s facial anatomy and desired aesthetic goals. It is important to consult with your surgeon to discuss all your needs and understand what the surgery entails, including what results to expect.
During your consultation with Dr. Goldstein or Dr. Elnekaveh, they will evaluate your skin and facial profile and review your medical history. They will assess your skin quality and the degree of aging to determine if you are a good candidate for a facelift.
Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Elnekaveh will discuss and address any preferences or concerns you may have. They will also go over the risks and benefits of your surgery, what to expect from recovery, and what expectations you can have with your results. They will then customize a procedure plan best suited to your needs.
